Preservation Pavilion was a temporary space built at Balam Balam Place in Naarm to celebrate the end of summer and the abundance that summer provides in preparation for the colder months.
Across its program, 17 events brought together 27 creatives to explore preservation through both architectural and gastronomic perspectives.
Pavilions don’t have to protect us from the elements in the same way buildings do – they are an opportunity to workshop ideas while testing materials. Here, the design stemmed from the functions required. We knew the pavilion needed easy access to the roof for sun-drying, beams for hanging, a bench for prep, shelves for storage, and a ladder to get to the roof. It just so happened that the scaffolding we had access to was cobalt blue – a colour we’re often drawn to. For the roof, we borrowed bread crates from local bakeries as they are lightweight, removable and stackable – a necessary modularity.
The pavilion reflected its community. It did not emerge from a fixed design, but from an accumulation of what people could offer – materials scarce to us, but abundant to others – all gathered through networks of trust, generosity and time.
