Onam Sadya for Palestine & Sudan
2025

Onam is a harvest festival celebrated throughout South India, predominantly in Kerala, across all religious backgrounds. It celebrates the Malayali New Year, and commemorates the annual return of the mythical beloved King Mahabali, whose generosity and benevolence is revered throughout the state.

The 'Sadya', or feast, plays perhaps the largest part in festivities. It is a meal, traditionally eaten on a banana leaf with one's hands, that is comprised of around 26 different items- all vegetarian, and mostly vegan. Examples of items include avial, sambar, thoran, erissery, and more.

Kerala, Palestine & Sudan are areas of the world where agriculture and farming practises form the bedrock of community and cultural habits. In celebrating harvest and agriculture abundance, we believe Onam is a natural bridge.  Here, we had the opportunity to learn more about Onam, about Kerala, and about Kerala's long standing commitment and alliance to freedom struggles across the world.
